In a world where the grown-ups hold all the cards, three school friends experience the exhilarating, turbulent journey into adulthood. Spring Awakening is inspired by Frank Wedekind's controversial 1891 play about teenage sexuality and society's efforts to control it.
The musical was premiered on Broadway at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre in December 2006, following various workshops, concerts, rewrites and its Off-Broadway debut. It won eight Tony Awards, including Tonys for Best Musical, Direction, Book, Score and Featured Actor. It was premiered in the UK at the Lyric Hammersmith in January 2009, transferring to the Novello Theatre in the West End in March 2009.
It won Best New Musical at the Olivier Awards and Best Musical at the Critics' Circle Awards. This new edition is published alongside the revival at the Almeida Theatre, London, in December 2021.
